The shortwave radio industry needed a reliable magnetic storm forecasting service so that advance preparations could be made for these periodic disruptions. (There were steps that could be taken by communications engineers to alleviate the effects of the magnetic storms on the shortwave radio circuits and for this reason a reliable forecasting service for the industry was needed.)

[Nelson’s conclusions:] In summation, after more than 25 years of research in this field of solar system science, I can say without equivocation that there is very strong evidence that the planets when in certain predictable arrangements [heliocentrically] do cause changes to take place in those solar radiations that control our ionosphere. A chain reaction of planets to sun, sun to ionosphere and ionosphere to shortwave signals is very evident.”
